Family. Poaceae (Grass family).

Airas are small grasses with very slender stalks. They are common in bushland. All are introduced.

They are environmental weeds.

hair grass Elegant Hair-grass *Aira elegantissima Flower stalks three times spikelet length. At least some spiklelets awned.
hair grass Quicksilver Hair-grass (*Aira cupaniana) Spikelets less than 2.4mm long. At least some spiklelets awned. Common.
hair grass Silvery Hair-grass (*Aira caryophyllea) Spikelets more than 2.4mm long. At least some spiklelets awned.
hair grass Small Hair-grass (*Molineriella minuta) Awnless. Spikelets less than 2mm long.

The distribution of the three Aira species is uncertain because of confusion between the species. In Handbook to Plants in Victoria, J.H. Willis 1970, the three were included in A. caryophyllea. In The Distribution and Conservation of Vascular Plants in the North central area, Victoria" A.C Beaglehole 1982, almost all were placed in A. cupaniana.
