Silver Poplar - introduced (*Populus alba)

Other names: White Poplar.

Family: Salicaceae (Willow family).

Native of Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.

Occurrence: A weed along creeks and in damp places.

Identification:

• the leaves are lobed and the lobes have small teeth
• the branches are silvery
• it grows to a large spreading tree.

Silver Poplar has been widely planted. It often spreads.

Populus: from the name used by the Romans for Arbor populi, the Peoples' Tree; alba: white.
