Common Ice-plant - a weed (*Mesembryanthemum crystallinum)

Family: Aizaceae (Pigface family).

Native of South Africa.

Occurrence: Ice-plant is a weed of the Mallee and coastal areas. There are occasional records for Central Victoria e.g. at Campbells Creek.

Identification:

it is a prostrate annual with broad (1 to 9 cm) usually spoon-shaped leaves
the leaves are covered with glistening, bead like growths, which can resemble salt or ice
the leaves are succulent and may be tinged pink.

Ice-plant is a salt-tolerant plant, and often grows on saline soils of the Mallee or along the coast.
